The Eraniel Palace is situated in Eraniel. This place is about 14km from Nagercoil, 28km from Kanyakumari, 6 km from Padmanabhapuram and 8km from Colachel. It is also called as Thai Kottaram. Chera Empire was divided into 18 kingdoms such as Venadu, Kuttam, Karkanadu, Aruvavadathalai nadu, Aruvanadu etc. Of these Venadu kingdom was the forerunner to the modern kingdom of Travancore. In the absence of clear records, one set claim that the Eraniel Palace was constructed during the reign of Vanchi Marthandavarma , while other claim that it was constructed during the reign of Cheraman Perumal - one of the 63 saivite saints. Legend says that Cheraman Perumal , who vanished from the Eraniel Palace , was being taken to Heaven in his Physical body.
